Once soldered, pickled and dried, check your joint is fully soldered on the inside and outside. Then make sure the two ends are flat together. If the metal has moved during soldering and there is a small step in part of the joint (or along the entire joint), this will have to be rectified before continuing. Carefully file off any excess solder without filing the silver itself. If the step covers more than half the gauge you can lead it down. This process will protect the original thickness and re-establish a flat seam.

Using a piece of lead sheet 50mm × 25mm (2” × 1”) and 2mm/1⁄16” thick, holding it at the long end with the other covering the uneven joint. Now using your planishing hammer, carefully hammer the joint with the lead sandwiched between the silver and hammer. This will even out the seam and leave a small step which can be filed off. Remove any traces of lead.

With your joint now flat and even, carefully remove any excess solder from the inside and outside of your piece, leaving a clean seam.
